A "Golden Mask" Between Tradition and Innovation

Both judging panels decided against giving "something for everyone", but, rather, to maintain a certain balance between tradition and innovation. Thus, "Dance of the Vampires" was named the top musical (and Manana Gogitidze and Ivan Ozhogin were declared best performers), Boris Milgram was declared best director ("Scarlet Sails" from Perm), and Alexei Lyudmilin was named best conductor ("Scarlet Sails" from Novosibirsk). In the opera category Dmitry Cherniakov (Bolshoi Theatre's "Ruslan and Lyudmila") was named best director and best set designer; best performer awards were given to Nadezhda Kutcher (Perm's "Medea Material") and Ildar Abdrazakov (Saint Petersburg's "The Tales of Hoffmann"), and "A Midsummer Night's Dream" from the Stanislavsky and Nemirovich-Danchenko Moscow Academic Music Theatre was named best production.
