2 January 1925
Irina Arkhipova was born
Her mother sang in the choir of the Bolshoi Theatre at one time, her father was an engineer, but knew how to play four musical instruments: piano, balalaika, guitar and mandolin. Irina herself in childhood was engaged in music with Olga Gnesina and sang in the school choir. However, it so happened that the first university that Arkhipova graduated, and with honors, was the Moscow Architectural Institute. For some time, she worked in her specialty, in particular, she designed the Moscow Finance Institute and residential buildings on the Yaroslavl Highway. But in parallel with this, Arkhipova studied at the evening department of the Moscow Conservatory, and then still decided to transfer to full-time education. Having received a diploma, she worked for some time at the Sverdlovsk Opera and Ballet Theatre and only in 1956, at 31, she was accepted into the troupe of the Bolshoi Theatre, one of the leading singers of which Arkhipova was for three decades.
