Mikhail Bulgakov read his play “Zoyka’s Apartment” to Vakhtangov Theatre company
It was there that a comedy was ordered to the playwright, and in September 1925, Bulgakov received his royalties for it. After rehearsals in March and April 1926, Bulgakov was asked to rewrite his work. The premiere of the play took place a few months later, at the end of October. Unfortunately, the first edition of the play was lost. It was longer than the final version with a different ending. Also it contained a folk rhyme, which, of course, was not allowed by official censorship: "With all sails set our ship, Communists will be food for fish."
